The Brits have lots to celebrate and they know how to do that in style. British High Commissioner Howard Drake and British Consul General Jonathan Dart threw a Summer Garden Party at the Forest Hill home of the consul last week to showcase some British accomplishments in the realms of education, culture, innovation, manufacturing, sport and the production of bouncing baby heirs to the throne. It’s not just a hollow boast when their latest promotional slogan proclaims Britain is Great... they really do have a lot to celebrate.

Our relationship with the mother ship has remained strong and friendly throughout its long history and shows no sign of abating. Collaborating on business initiatives and developing stronger transatlantic relationships remains a core principal for both countries emphasized by the presence of Ontario’s Lieutenant-Governor David Onley and many representatives of British brands in Canada.

Besides the ubiquitous food and broad selection of refreshing libations, the Land Rover and Jaguar sports car on display were major attractions. Although the skies threatened to open, we were just sprinkled with a refreshing shower and the heavy rains held off long enough for everyone to enjoy the lovely leafy back garden of the elegant home on Dunvegan. But, every time either of the gorgeous iconic British automobiles received even the slightest smattering of rain drops... a young fellow dashed over to wipe them down thoroughly and restore their elegant sheen.

The hospitality was warm and conversation lively as delicious hors d’oeuvres were passed and glasses refilled – a jolly good show.
