With airlift and pent-up demand both soaring, Germany is preparing for a bumper crop of Canadian tourists this year.

That was the message at the kick-off press conference luncheon yesterday in Toronto hosted by the German National Tourist Office. The event launched the annual campaign “German. Local. Culture.” which emphasizes the huge diversity of experiences that await clients in Germany.

This year’s promotion will focus on four areas: Green (the country’s green spaces and sustainable efforts); Flair (including the diverse architectural charms from palaces to thatched-roof homes); Craft (the thriving artisan culture) and Taste (both regional and cosmopolitan).

“Tourism promotes peace and brings people together,” Antja Brokjans, Director of the GNTO in Canada told the crowd. “The world is ready to travel, and to spend money doing it.” Germany is actually very high up on Canadian’s post-pandemic wishlist, coming in #4 in Europe (after France, Italy and the UK).

The country certainly ticks a wide array of boxes when it comes to what Canadian clients are looking for: a great mix of urban and rural experiences (the countryside being easily accessible by frequent and reliable local transport); history to marvel at – there are 25,000 castles and palaces; and stunning natural beauty. Imagine 53,000 hiking trails, all protected for the future!

And lift. This summer will see access to Germany back to 95% of pre-pandemic capacities, including non-stop flights every week from:

  • YVR – 21 to FRA and MCH
  • YYC – 11 to FRA
  • YYZ – 35 to FRA and MCH
  • YUL – 21 to FRA and MCH
  • YHZ – 3 to FRA

Also on the aviation front, German carrier Condor, which has offered seasonal service to Canada, will for the first time offer year round service to YYZ.

Brokjans is clearly feeling optimistic about the uptick in travel. And is herself looking forward to returning to her home country, where she especially enjoys the outdoor cafes and restaurants, “life on the street” as she puts it. “German cities have so much flair and such charm. Like so many here in Canada, I can’t wait to go!”
