Biting Questions with Ian Patterson, Managing Director, Canada, MSC Cruises
Ian Patterson

Ian Patterson

Where were you born? In Dublin, Ireland. I came to Canada in 1984 – in a huge snowstorm!

How long have you been in the business? Since 1987. I started as a res sales agent at the Wholesale Travel Group.

How many people work for you here in Canada? I have 2 BDMs here and a dedicated inside agent in Fort Lauderdale.

What’s the best part of the job? All of it. Every day is different. That’s what makes our industry so addictive, and why we can’t get out of the business.

What was your 1st job? I was a tea blender for my dad’s tea company.

What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done? Bungy jumping out West. I was half way down and suddenly thought, “What am I doing?!”

Any guilty pleasures? That’s why they’re guilty – I can’t tell you about them. But I can assure you I don’t have a sweet tooth.

What’s your favourite airline? Air Canada – I find great service and they’re always willing to help when there’s an issue.

Do you have a favourite travel app? Several – Marriott, Hilton, Avis.

Any hobbies or interests? I love to golf.

What skill or talent do you admire in someone? The ability to draw or paint. My 23-year-old daughter is an outstanding artist, but she certainly didn’t get that from me.

Is there anything you won’t eat? Baked beans.

How much do you travel? I figure about 100 days this year.

Ever had a brush with fame? When I was a kid, I was introduced to Muhammad Ali.

What is your greatest extravagance? Golf balls – because I lose a lot!

If you could change 1 thing about the industry, what would it be? Managing capacity.

If you could sit next to anyone on a long-haul flight, who would it be? My late father.

What kind of car do you drive? A Volkswagen Touareg.

Do you have a favourite charity? Cancer charities.

What will be the biggest challenge for the industry in the next 12 months? Our concerns are when the Europeans are going to start travelling again.

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years? Probably what I’m doing now!
