It’s been a sleepy summer for the industry. But now that September is upon us, suppliers, tourism officials and other travel reps are waking up from hibernation. In other words, vacation time is over and it’s back to work.

Kicking off in full speed, the Mexico Tourism Board has a busy few months ahead, all in preparation for the destination’s upcoming high season. Last week, 20 travel professionals gathered at YTO’s Frida, a refined Mexican restaurant that is a tourist board favourite. On the luncheon menu: Riviera Nayarit with sides of seafood ceviche, fish tacos, vegetarian empanadas and caramel filled churros. Richard Zarkin, Public Relations Manager for  Riviera Nayarit, was in attendance to co-host the event and present the region’s latest developments and accolades.

A Virtuoso preferred destination, Riviera Nayarit is referred to as Mexico’s Pacific Treasure. And with many different tourist areas and attractions, this gem of a destination caters to all tourists and all interests. To name a few: surfing in Sayulita, historical attractions in San Blas and the longest beach in Mexico can be found in Novillero. Zarkin gave a quick presentation, highlighting new resort developments, upcoming events, festivals and recent awards and accolades.

Riviera Nayarit is not the only place in Mexico that is planning for a busy winter. Rodrigo Esponda, Director of Mexico Tourism Board, informed guests that the entire country is preparing for a 4% growth in Canadian visitors compared to the 1.6 million Canucks they welcomed last year. “No other country has shown the same amount of growth,” said Esponda. “The U.S. is a rather flat market.”

It’s little wonder why Esponda and Monica Garcia, Deputy Director of Mexico Tourism Board, have their hands full this fall. They have at least 2 Mexico FAMs planned and several more luncheons and dinners to host at Frida, all in the upcoming fall. This won’t be the last you’ll be hearing from the MTB folks!
