WestJet System Outage Delays Flights, Affects Operations

WestJet's operations - especially in Western Canada and at YYC - are apparently being affected Thursday, 14JUL, by what the carrier is calling "an infrastructure outage."

The issue arose this morning and the airline released a statement at 8:07 am Mountain Time:

"An infrastructure outage is currently impacting WestJet’s airport check-in, flight planning and payment services on westjet.com and continues to intermittently impact operations.

We are working to restore service and encourage guests to arrive early and check their flight status due to delays with the check-in process at the airport.

We thank all guests for their patience as we continue to work towards resolving the issue."

According to CBC, the service interruptions are expected to last for hours.

There may be multiple issues affecting WestJet's service in Calgary and elsewhere.

CBC identifies at least one problem being "the airport's (YYC's) navigation system."

According to that report, "the disruption was being caused by one of (NavCanada's) telecommunications service providers, Zayo. According to NavCanada, Zayo was estimating a two to four-hour restoration time as of about 8:30 a.m. MT."

It cites Brian Boudreau, a spokesperson with NavCanada saying, ""As such, air traffic control will reduce the flow of departures and arrivals temporarily in some situations until the Zayo has restored service. Procedures are in place to assure safety of aircraft in our airspace."

However, that may not be what's affecting WestJet's check-in and online payment services. The carrier's statement online calls the problem an "IT Outage."

The airline advises it will continue to update the notice on its web site as the situation evolves and more information becomes available.
