Up Front with Susan Cianfarani, Cianfarani Travel, Woodbridge, Ont.

Where were you born? In Calabria, in Southern Italy. I came to Canada when I was 3 months old.

What was your first job? I had a paper route at 12, and at 13, added a second job as a coat checker, and at 14 added a third job telemarketer - selling newspapers.

How long have you been in the business? (Thinks) About 27 years now, starting with Alba Tours.

How has the business changed since you got into it? Not just the internet, obviously, but today’s travel agency really needs to re-invent itself.

Do you have a specialty? We’ve recently started a luxury travel and destination weddings division.

What was your best FAM? Back in 1999 with KLM – Amsterdam and the Greek Islands.

What drives you crazy? Not having enough time in the day!

What was your biggest individual sale? A 3-night family getaway to Sandy Lane in Barbados - $40,000.

How do you cope with jetlag? I set my watch to the local time as soon as I board the plane. Lots of water, lots of rest.

What do you do to keep you clients loyal? It’s not really one thing, but a lot of little things such as always thanking them for the business, little surprises such as champagne or a gift basket in their room. They’re not expecting it and they are totally surprised.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received? “Follow your instincts” and “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”

If you had to spend six months in a destination, which one would you pick? Anguilla! Without a doubt! It’s so authentic. Or maybe… Turks and Caicos. They both have beautiful ocean views, but are close to North America.

If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing? Travel has always been my passion, so probably volunteer work - in Anguilla or Turks and Caicos!
