U.S. and International Travel by Canadians More than Triples in AUG This Year: StatsCan

Canada Airport ArrivalsStatsCan has released updated information on Canadian travel to the U.S. and overseas that reflects the summer travel season. And, as Open Jaw reported in AUG, it continues to reveal the major uptick the industry is experiencing over 2021 travel levels.
Overall, trips abroad by Canadians in AUG this year numbered nearly 3.8 million. That's an increase of a whopping 340 per cent over the previous AUG of 2021.
In the month of AUG, 752,900 Canadian residents returned from visiting overseas, more than double from the same month in 2021 (341,700). During the same month, travel to U.S. increased six-fold over AUG 2021.
While those numbers are extraordinary, they still significantly lag behind pre-pandemic travel levels.
More Canadians travel to the United States

Canadian residents returned from nearly 3 million trips to the United States in AUG. That's almost six times the number recorded in AUG 2021 (506,100) but only 62.5 per cent of the level in AUG 2019, before the pandemic.

Of this total, 2.2 million people made a road trip, crossing by land in AUG 2022, with over half (51.1 per cent) being same-day trips.

The number of Canadians returning by air from the United States was 685,000 that month, up from 170,000 in AUG 2021 and which represented 92.7 per cent of the trips recorded in the same month in 2019, before the pandemic.

On a monthly basis, about 400,000 more Canadians returned from the United States in AUG compared with JUL.

Canadians travelling overseas

On a monthly basis from JUL, 32,000 more Canadians returned from visiting overseas in August.

752,900 Canadian residents returned from visiting overseas in AUG, 2022 representing over two-thirds (67.3 per cent) of the number from pre-pandemic AUG 2019.

But that was also down from the 82.9 per cent recovery reached in JUL this year, reinforcing the fact that travel recovery is not happening on one smooth, straight line upwards, but still has its ups and downs... and quite a ways to go yet.
