Curaçao’s charm and appeal has been long since overshadowed by its neighbouring sister island, Aruba. But, this Caribbean treasure wants to take centre stage, and make the C of the ABC islands the star of the show.
The Curaçao Tourist Board recently hosted an intimate luncheon at Loire Restaurant on Harbord Street to promote its new Air Canada non-stop service from Toronto – an absolute pre-requisite for being in the sun destination spotlight.
Chandra Smouse of the Curaçao Tourist Board welcomed guests with a quick speech and promotional video. For those of us who had never visited the colourful island, it was an enticing introduction, and for those who were familiar, a nostalgic reminder.
In 1997, the country’s historic city centre of Willemstad was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status. “We have more to offer than sand, the sea, sun and beautiful beaches,” said Chandra. Willemstad’s cultural and historical discoveries are an element that place Curaçao at the forefront of the Netherlands Antilles.
Loire served diners a delicious 3 course meal and there was no shortage of wine. With a member of their tourist board or one of the island’s hotel and resort representatives seated at each table, Curaçao conversation flowed and guests were sure to take advantage of learning about everything the Dutch paradise has to offer.
ACV’s weekly non-stop will start Christmas Eve and operate each Saturday through April 7th. Curaçao will no longer be upstaged by its sister islands. She is making a comeback and with the ACV ensemble is ready to steal the show.
