Airlines are pushing back against a movement to ban short flights in Europe. France has already approved a ban on 3 routes, and calls in the environmental sector are growing to ban flights on routes of less than 6 hours by train.
According to Reuters, the aviation industry plans to “invoke EU rights to freedom of movement.”
IATA says the flight ban won’t even reduce greenhouse gas emissions much. "We'll embarrass people with the data," IATA’s Willie Walsh said. "If we banned all flights of less than 500 km in Europe...it would be less than 4% of the CO2 in Europe, right? I think there's a perception that it would be 80%. It's not a solution," he told Reuters.
