A Congressman from New York says the Nexus trusted traveller system between the U.S. and Canada needs to embrace new technologies to help it clear a backlog of applications.
Brian Higgins, a democrat, and, as CTV News notes, a “frequent champion of streamlined travel between Canada and the United States,” introduced a new piece of legislation this week. If it passes the American lawmaking process in the House and Senate, it would require the Department of Homeland Security to use video teleconferencing technology instead of cumbersome in-person interviews, which have been the bottleneck to clearing a post-pandemic backlog in the hundreds of thousands.
He pointed out a pilot project in 2021 had shown the Zoom alternative was successful and argued it should be a long-term solution for overall improved efficiency at the border.
