Coast Guard Opens Investigation into Antarctic Cruise Incidents

The U.S. Coast Guard Activities Europe, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and international flag administrations are opening investigations on the deaths and injuries on cruise ships sailing in or around Antarctica between 15NOV to 01DEC 2022.

The investigations include an incident in NOV when a rogue wave hit a ship on its way to Ushuaia, Argentina, resulting in one death and four injuries, reports USA Today. Other investigations include incidents involving a passenger experiencing a keel-bladder failure onboard an inflatable boat, the capsizing of an inflatable boat, and an incident on board a fourth ship. The Coast Guard and the NTSB also sent teams to conduct safety investigations in Ushuaia, Argentina, in order to prevent other similar incidents.
