Sargassum Cleanup Begins in Quintana Roo as Season Gets Early Start

Cleanup efforts of sargassum seaweed, infamous for its foul odour, have begun in Mexico’s Quintana Roo state, with more than 250 government workers leading efforts to clear the seaweed from beaches.

As reported by Mexico News Daily, sargassum season typically does not start until APR or MAY, but this year the seaweed has already landed on the state’s Caribbean beaches in popular destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The state governor announced floating sea fences would be installed in Mahahual to prevent sargassum from reaching the beach.
