Peru’s Machu Picchu reopened on 15FEB after being closed for nearly a month beginning in JAN, amid political protests throughout the country. According to Peru’s culture ministry, agreements were made between authorities, social groups and the local tourism industry to guarantee security of the tourist attraction and transportation services leading to it.
As reported by NBC News, protests calling for the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and members of Peru’s Congress have occupied much of the country for more than two months, including Cuzco, the gateway city to Machu Picchu. The demonstrations caused a blockade of the train tracks leading to the attraction.
