Op/Ed: After Holiday Chaos, VIA has Melted Down Again – Sadly This Will Continue

Via Rail’s meltdown over the 2022 winter holidays, which resulted in hours of delays for many pas, was not the first the rail operator experienced, nor will it be the last, writes transportation analyst and policy adviser Greg Gormick for the Globe and Mail.

According to Gormick, Via Rail’s problems are due to politically-motivated cuts throughout the operator’s history. To remedy this issue, Gormick suggests a balanced national transportation policy and for the Ontario government to fund VIA’s operations instead of relying on the federal government to pick up the tab. Until then, Gormick says the national passenger rail line meltdowns will continue.
