Tourism Unprepared to Accommodate Growing Segment of Older Travellers

According to the United Nations, people over the age of 65 are the world’s fastest growing age group, and by 2050, older persons will outnumber those ages 15 to 24.

Skift provides an analysis that the tourism industry will need to adapt to this demographic, which is predicted to inevitably be a greater part of the customer base. Those with disabilities are predicted to also make up a larger portion of the older traveller segment. Nearly one-fifth of adults aged 65 and older reported difficulty with seeing, hearing, communication, mobility, memory or concentration, or self-care, according to the Administration for Community Living’s 2021 demographics.

Skift adds that facilitating this group will pose a challenge for the industry, which has historically “not been very accessible.” It adds that accessibility builds at historic sites and accommodations, as well as iconic nature destinations, may simply not be possible.
