New Rail Links Between Italy and Germany Set for 2026

A new cross-border rail link between Italy and Germany is scheduled to open in 2026 through a partnership between Italian state-owned rail company Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS Group) and Germany’s Deutsche Bahn.

As reported by Business Travel News, the partnership will see the creation of two new routes: from Rome to Munich and from Milan to Munich, where daily services will be operated by Trenitalia’s high-speed Frecciarossa 1000 train. The route departing from Rome will stop at Florence, Bologna, Verona, Rovereto, Trento, Bolzano, Brennero, Innsbruck and Munich. The journey from Milan will stop at Brescia, Verona, Bolzano, Brennero and Innsbruck before arriving in Munich.

The new service is one of the 10 pilot projects supported by the European Commission to improve cross-border rail services throughout the continent.
