“A Threat To Safety”: Pilot Associations Team Up To Stop Single Pilot Ops

Several of the largest pilot organizations in the world, including the European Cockpit Association, the Federation of Airline Pilots' Associations and Air Line Pilots Association, are calling flight regulators like ICAO to rethink plans for single pilot operations, according to Simple Flying. The groups cite safety issues with proposed plans to operate commercial airplanes with only one pilot on board.

40 countries, including the UK and Germany, are looking at ways to make single pilot operations a reality by 2030. Single pilot operations mean planes are operated by one human worker supported only by technology. Advocates say this would free up pilots to fly more routes while reducing flight costs and training times. But opponents maintain that not having a second person qualified to operate a plane onboard is too risky and technology cannot account for all the potential problems that can occur during air travel.
