The shark population in Maya Bay in Thailand saw a major increase during the pandemic and a tourism ban that kept visitors clear of the area for four years. With visitors returning to the bay, the shark population is once again struggling, Skift reports.
The government is now trying to strike a balance and rebrand the area as a nature reserve to maintain the sharks while allowing some tourism to continue. There are new restrictions: tour boats dock on the other side of the island from the beach, the number of visitors is limited to 375 per hour, and they can now only go knee-deep into the water.
