Despite the return of more normal travel patterns following the pandemic, business travel continues to be slow and there is no guarantee of when it will return to normal, the Financial Times is reporting. Corporate travel spending might not return to 2019 levels until late 2024, and some forecasts are suggesting it could not fully recover until 2026.
Higher air fares and hotel costs remain the number one barrier to an increase in business travel, according to a recent Deloitte study. Technology like Zoom has also made business travel less necessary, and the pandemic forced people to learn how to use these tools.
Instead, business trips are becoming more rare but also purposeful, involving longer and more productive trips rather than quick trips for one event.
