Delta Air Lines Expected To Start Overbooking More Flights

The president of Delta Air Lines said in a recent earnings call that the airline is planning to overbook more flights. Currently, the airline sells 103 per cent of available seats on each flight, and it is considering increasing that to 104 per cent, and eventually 105 per cent if the increase does not cause major disruptions.

Statistically, overbooking makes sense for airlines as there are no-shows on almost every flight. However, when too many passengers do show up it can cause major disruptions, like when a Delta passenger was forcibly removed from a flight in 2017 after being bumped.

The airline has previously offered USD $8,000-$10,000 to convince passengers to voluntarily change their flights. In the earnings call, the president stressed the need to strike the right balance.
