The conference industry in Canada is struggling to keep up with a surge in demand for event spaces, the Globe and Mail is reporting. Many conference centres and other companies were forced to lay people off during the pandemic, and many of those employees have since found work in other sectors. The tightness of the labour market has made replacing those workers extremely challenging.
Compounding the issue is the speed at which demand for event spaces has surged. Recovery for the sector was much slower than other areas, but conference centres are now reporting a sudden surge in demand for trade shows and similar large events, with predictions demand could hit 2019 levels by 2026.
