New Report Blames Airlines for Most Flight Cancellations

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) published a new report on 28APR, saying that the increased number of flight cancellations was mostly due to factors that airlines control, which includes cancellations for maintenance issues or lack of a crew, reports the Ottawa Sun.
According to the GAO report, airlines caused 60 per cent or more of cancellations from OCT through DEC 2021, higher than at any time in 2018 or 2019. GAO also said airlines are taking longer to recover from flight disruptions like storms, saying that surges in cancellations during 2021 and 2022 lasted longer than they did pre-pandemic.

In 2021, GAO said Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, Spirit Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Frontier were each responsible for 60 per cent or more of their own total cancellations.
