The Financial Post is warning of turbulence ahead in the air industry, as it confirmed 01MAY that Air Canada pilots voted in 84 favour of a merger with the the Air Line Pilots Association. ALPA has 60,000 members worldwide and is the largest airline pilots’ union globally. The move is seen as providing Air Canada pilots more bargaining resources and leverage, although the report notes they are not at this point in negotiations. The merger goes to a vote by ALPA’s executive board on 17MAY.
Meanwhile, WestJet pilots are in an official ‘cooling off period’ from unsuccessful negotiations with that airline, and have authorized strike action as soon as 16MAY should they fail to reach a new deal.
