WestJet and Air Line Pilots Association Still Negotiating as Strike Deadline Looms

WestJet and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) union continue to negotiate over issues like pay and job security as the strike deadline looms on 16MAY, the CBC reports the union revealing.

Negotiations between the 1,850 WestJet and Swoop pilots who are ALPA members began in SEP. In APR, pilots voted in favour of a strike mandate, which could mean job action this month. According to the CBC, both sides are meeting in Calgary throughout this week and ALPA has committed to further meetings in Toronto from 08-16MAY.

ALPA says the union is pushing for a “North American standard contract,” which would narrow the gap between wages at WestJet and other airlines in North America. But as Open Jaw has reported, WestJet’s CEO says there’s no way Canadian pilots will be able to achieve the same terms as recent, rich new pilot deals reached in the U.S.
