The rate of mishandled baggage (one that is reported as delayed, damaged, stolen or lost) almost doubled globally in 2022, soaring to 7.6 bags per 1,000 passengers, up from 4.35 in 2021, reports The Guardian.
The mishandling rate for international flights was more than eight times higher than the rate for domestic flights. Mishandling rates were also considerably worse for airlines operating in Europe compared with North America and the Asia-Pacific region, it noted. Errors during flight transfers were the largest contributor to mishandled baggage in 2022, accounting for 42 per cent of affected luggage.
