A Taste Of Israel as Miznon Opens in Toronto

Israel Ministry of Tourism - Miznon

Israel’s beloved Miznon Restaurant has opened its latest location, bringing flavours, flair and fun to Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood.

If the ideal restaurant combines truly delicious and inventive food with a fun-crazy vibe and entertaining staff in a great location, Miznon – opened just 2 months ago at Bay and Bloor – truly fits the bill.

At a lunch last Friday 26MAY, chef Eyal Shani flew in from Israel to host some 50 media types, including Open Jaw, at a lunch that was so entertaining and creative you could see why it’s such a whopping success. Part of an international mini-chain with a total of 15 locations in Israel, the US, the UK, Europe, Australia and Singapore, the resto is already receiving accolades, including a spot on the “20 Best New Restaurants in Toronto” in the current issue of Toronto Life magazine.

Miznon is billed as street food which makes me think of quick, high carb, high grease eatings. But Shani and his team have created a sometimes-cheeky menu that varies, but last week included fish-n-chips (“not the British one” but with garlic aioli); a lobster roll “with tomato ovaries”; and “The best hummus you will ever eat.”

The chicken salad with hints of mint was slightly exotic and extremely delicious. A meal-in-a-pita is their trademark, and the cauliflower in a pita was to swoon over. Yup, a lot of it was sloppy and a sign on the wall actually tells you to eat with your hands, all adding to the fun and slightly crazy atmosphere.

Gal Hana, Consul Director for Canada for the Government of Israel Ministry of Tourism was at the event and is clearly a big fan. “The food seems simple but this chef has the magic touch – and when it comes to restaurants, the mood is part of the experience.” The Miznon restos in Israel, he assured me, have the same vibe, music, super-friendly staff and happy mood.

If like a lot of travel advisors you are selling more domestic travel this year, why not recommend Miznon for your YYZ-bound clients?  Or if you’re putting together itineraries for Israel, be sure to suggest Miznon.  As Toronto Life puts it: “Serious street food at its best.”
