Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) are seen as a potential solution to reduce the carbon footprint of flying amid increasing flight-shaming by environmentalists.
But while SAF’s are considered the ‘magic elixir’ for the aviation industry's net zero goals, they are currently too limited in availability to have any practical impact on air travel’s carbon footprint, reports the Guardian.
SAFs currently represent only 0.1 per cent of total jet fuel needed, and experts express their increasing scepticism about the possibility of scaling up SAFs to meet real market fuel demand.
