Due to the heightened risk of hungry birds colliding with aircraft, the Montreal Trudeau International Airport is implementing stricter measures against picnicking at its plane-spotting park, reports the Globe and Mail.
Picnics are prohibited at Jacques-de-Lesseps Park — which is the only observation park of its kind in Canada — because the food can attract birds, which could dangerously collide with landing or departing aircraft. Several bird strike incidents in recent years have resulted in fatal outcomes.
The airport has launched a campaign to raise awareness about the danger of picnics, with increased surveillance by special constables and signage. YUL officials say they have seen an improvement since the campaign began earlier this spring, but if the situation worsens, they may consider closing the park altogether.
