Ancient Computers, Too Few Pilots and Air Traffic Controller Shortages. US Air Travel Could Be a Rough Ride This Summer

The U.S. aviation system is bracing for a challenging summer for travel. Passenger volumes are expected to exceed pre-pandemic levels, but at the same time, experts express concerns over strains on a system that has already experienced frequent meltdowns in the past year, reports CNN Travel. 

One of the most pressing issues is a shortage of air traffic controllers, with a shortfall of approximately 3,000 controllers. As a result, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has asked airlines to reduce summer flights in the NYC area. Outdated technology, weather conditions, and a pilot shortage are additional pitfalls that could create air travel chaos. 

As Open Jaw reported, the Biden administration is pushing to bolster passenger protection and compensation for delays or cancellations after airline passenger complaints rose 55 per cent in 2022.
