Chinese Airline Under Fire Over Strict Body Weight Rules for Flight Attendants

Hainan Airlines, a Chinese-owned airline, has faced backlash for implementing a weight requirement policy for its flight attendants, reports Global News.

The airline said an equation used to measure a flight attendant’s height to weight ratio was enacted to implement a “professional image” for their cabin crew. According to the report, flight attendants who exceeded the “standard limit” by 10 per cent would be immediately grounded.

Chinese social media outlets have been flooded with complaints about the weight standard. The report notes recent updates to policies for flight attendants at other airlines, such as gender-neutral uniforms, relaxed hair and tattoo policies, highlighting increasingly-different standards for airlines in different regions.
