Responding to requests from pilot unions, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ruled that it will require new airline planes to have a second barrier to protect pilots from cockpit intrusions when the main cockpit door is open, reports CTV News.
The rule aims to give pilots more protection when they take a bathroom break or get their meals. It will apply to commercial planes made after mid-2025 and affect airlines that operate scheduled flights, but not charter operators.
Pilot unions asked the FAA to extend the requirement for secondary barriers to all airline planes, including older ones, but there is no provision in the rulling requiring airlines to retrofit current planes.
