The Quintana Roo Sargassum Monitoring Network is predicting low levels of sargassum seaweed on Quintana Roo's coastline this summer, reports Mexico News Daily.
Sargassum is a type of algae that floats in island-like masses and its landfall on Quintana Roo beaches typically peaks in JUN and JUL. The network’s director noted that while there is an historically large amount of sargassum in the Atlantic Ocean, it appears to be moving northwest, meaning Mexico’s eastern beaches should be free from sargassum or experience manageable levels this year.
The shift in the sargassum mat’s course northwest this year is attributed to increased water temperature.
