Flight cancellations and delays have surged in the U.S. with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) receiving blame for amplifying the situation due to understaffing, reports SFGATE.
Over 5,400 flights were cancelled from 24-27JUN, largely due to smoke and severe storms that affected the New York-area airports, as Open Jaw reported. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby directly criticized the FAA, accusing it of reducing arrival and departure rates by 40 and 75 per cent respectively, leading to massive disruptions.
A recent report by the Transportation Department's Office of Inspector General highlighted staffing challenges and lack of a scheduling tool at the FAA. The U.S. Travel Association called for Congress and the FAA to expedite the hiring of air traffic controllers.
