IATA Calls for EU, U.S. Gov’ts to be Held Accountable for Air Traffic Control Shortages

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released a statement expressing concern over the disappointing performance of Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Europe and the U.S.

According to IATA, governments need to be held accountable for the economic and environmental costs of poor ATC performance so they have an incentive to make better decisions. The statement pointed out that ATC staffing levels are still far below those of 2019. Modernization and finding ways to maintain essential ATC services during busy travel periods are also necessary.

IATA highlighted the challenging ATC environment currently faced by all carriers in Europe, saying the impact is most severe at Europe's busiest airports, particularly LGW, which currently ranks as the worst performing among 31 major airports.

As Open Jaw reported, negotiations between EU ATC workers and their Europe-wide employer have broken down and strikes could commence with just a five-day notice period and take place as early as this week.
