Tourist activities, such as defacing historical landmarks, public drunkenness and disrespectful behaviour, are disturbing local communities, while tourist transportation alone causes about 5 per cent of global emissions and rising.
Now, some European cities, such as Amsterdam, are taking action to address overtourism following a period of tranquillity during lockdown. The question arises whether cities should defy capitalism and attempt to repel tourists.
From 1998 to 2019, international tourist arrivals doubled to 2.4 billion per year.
