IATA: Proposed Night Flight Ban at Brussels Airport Should be Scrapped

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has voiced its opposition to a proposed ban on night flights at Brussels Zaventem airport.

The association said the ban is premature as it overlooks the city’s international obligations under the Balanced Approach to noise, as well as bilateral air service agreements and EU law. The Balanced Approach mandates that flight restrictions should only be considered as a last resort. Many of the flights that would be impacted by the ban are cargo flights, meaning it would have a negative impact on the Belgian economy, as well as for air connectivity, IATA reports.

IATA is urging the government to engage in consultations with stakeholders to address noise concerns, while also safeguarding the economic and community benefits of air connectivity in Belgium.

The news comes as the Dutch government won an industry challenge to its mandate of reduced flights at AMS to reduce noise pollution.
