Internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett passed away on 01SEP at the age of 76. "He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many," read a heartfelt post on Buffett's website.

Buffet's ever-popular songbook romanticized the laid-back vibe of tropical vacations, and, especially as he partnered to brand travel and hospitality properties, he became one of the most powerful, pre-digital travel 'influencers.'

On Sunday, 03SEP, Key West's iconic Duval Street became a sea of emotion and memories. Thousands of Florida Keys residents and visitors gathered to pay tribute to Buffett's legacy. With many donning flower leis and quirky headgear, the parade participants, embodying the spirit of Buffett's "Parrot Head" fans, journeyed towards the Margaritaville Store and Café. As they marched, the collective voice of the crowd singing the iconic "Margaritaville" filled the air, led by Florida Keys musician Howard Livingston.

Livingston, a longtime Florida Keys resident and a collaborator with Buffett, remarked, "Margaritaville is totally right here in Key West. Jimmy put it on the map, and every day we live that."

Buffett's bond with Key West was profound. Having discovered the destination in the early 1970s, its ambiance and culture seeped into his music, giving birth to timeless songs, including "Margaritaville."

Released on 14FEB, 1977, this song wasn't just a melody; it became a mindset for those "wastin' away," epitomizing a life of relaxation.

Beyond music, Buffett's portrayal of Key West's laid-back lifestyle made it a globally recognized destination. "Any person walking down the street here, ask them how they wound up here, they'll mention Jimmy Buffett," Livingston added, as reported by Florida Keys news.

Yet, Buffett's influence didn't stop at songs. The Margaritaville brand grew, birthing restaurants, resorts, and a multimillion-dollar empire. In 2016, he even secured a spot on Forbes' America's Richest Celebrities list, boasting a net worth of USD $550 million, as highlighted in a CBC report.

As his legacy continues to resonate, plans for two Margaritaville-inspired hotels in Southwest Florida are underway. Robert Kisabeth from TPI Hospitality noted, "This will not impact the Fort Myers Beach project. Jimmy never did fully commit to appear at our opening, but we always thought/hoped he would." Bookings for the new hotel and resort are expected to open 01FEB, 2024.

Additionally, fans can look forward to a new Buffett album set for release later this year, another way to "further honor and celebrate his life," as Kisabeth shared.

Buffett leaves behind his wife, Jane, their daughters, Savannah and Sarah, and son Cameron.
