Greece has taken steps to tackle overtourism at its iconic Athens Acropolis archaeological site, reports CNN.
Starting 04SEP 2023, the daily number of visitors has been limited to 20,000, with a new booking website implementing an hourly slot system. Currently, the Acropolis sees up to 23,000 visitors daily.
The goal is to ensure the safety and longevity of the monument. This trial run will likely be formally enforced from APR 2024. The new booking system will also be applied to other Greek archaeological sites that use electronic tickets, accounting for the majority of visitors, the report says.
