The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating thousands of pilots for potential unreported mental health concerns, reports Simple Flying.
The FAA is particularly concerned about former military pilots and is cross-referencing pilots' records with US Veterans Administration (VA) data. The investigation aims to ensure veteran pilots have not hidden their health from the FAA or overclaimed with the VA.
Out of approximately 600 licensed commercial pilots, 60 have been deemed an immediate risk and temporarily grounded. Commercial flying has always been stressful, and aviation unions advocate for better mental health support services. Some programs exist to provide pilots with a confidential lifeline to speak to fellow pilots about their challenges.
