According to CBC News, Perimeter Aviation, the owner of Bearskin Airlines, is finding itself unable to attract and retain pilots willing to work in northern Ontario due to a national pilot shortage.
The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the retirement of older pilots, creating a shortage of roughly 5,000 pilots within the Canadian aviation industry.
Unlike before the shortage, now, the smaller carrier must compete with larger Canadian airlines and even major U.S. carriers. Newly graduated pilots from flight schools are being hired by major carriers earlier in their careers, bypassing smaller airlines like Perimeter Aviation that may not be able to offer competitive salaries.
In the case of Perimeter Aviation, it has implemented various strategies, including pay raises, subsidies for flight school costs, and in-house flight simulators to address the shortage and retain pilots. However, the challenge remains for small regional airlines to compete for new entries into the industry.
