Thousands Sign Petition Calling for Extension of Tourism Suspension in West Maui

According to Hawaii News Now, thousands have signed a petition urging the extension of the tourism suspension in West Maui following AUG wildfires that devastated the region, displacing many residents.

Although Gov. Josh Green announced an 08OCT reopening date, some locals feel it's premature and that the needs of those still homeless and recvoering are being overshadowed.

Over 50% of the island's accommodations are in West Maui. While the state intends to centralize displaced individuals in a few hotels, many feel the relocation challenges, especially with families, are being understated. Tourism industry members note the popularity of West Maui but emphasize the importance of prioritizing displaced residents.
