According to Skift, California legislators have passed two bills targeting "junk fees" in the hospitality industry.
Senate Bill 537 mandates businesses offering short-term lodging (up to 30 days) to display a room rate inclusive of all fees except government taxes. This applies to online listings and is relevant for hotels in California, regardless of the consumer's location. Senate Bill 478 prohibits all California businesses from advertising prices without including all mandatory fees.
Governor Gavin Newsom has until 14OCT to decide on the bills. While the California Hotel & Lodging Association supports the transparency, companies like Expedia Group and Airbnb have expressed concerns.
