Natural disasters severely affect tourism, reports Skift. The European Travel Commission reported that 7.6% of travellers now prioritize avoiding extreme weather events when planning trips. This influences choices, with some selecting cooler destinations due to heat waves, for example, or avoiding the Caribbean and Florida coasts during hurricane season.

After Maui's wildfires, analysts forecast a significant drop in visitors, with Hawaii losing USD $11 million daily. In contrast, areas like New Orleans and Kauai have shown resilience, recovering from disasters over time.

Natural disasters also prompt changes in tourism marketing. On the one hand, Australia cancelled campaigns amidst wildfires, while Puerto Rico's post-Hurricane Maria strategies led to a tourism boost.
