The Campi Flegrei super volcano near Naples, Italy, has recently experienced hundreds of minor earthquakes, culminating in a 4.2 magnitude quake, the most powerful in 40 years, reports New York Times.
The vast volcanic area, larger than Mount Vesuvius, sits near Pompeii and could be devastating if it erupted with full intensity. Despite no immediate eruption risk, the ground elevation is increasing by 1.5 cm monthly due to seismic activity. Researchers suggest that current dangers are primarily seismic but have not ruled out eruption possibilities. Potential evacuations have been recommended, echoing a similar scenario from the 1980s when 40,000 residents were moved from Pozzuoli.
