In an opinion piece published by National Newswatch, Willie Walsh, the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), criticizes Canada's airline compensation rules, deeming them a wrong approach to a challenging issue.
Canada's government plans to require airlines to compensate passengers for delays and cancellations, even when the airline isn't responsible for the disruption. Walsh argues that such regulations could lead to higher costs for airlines, potentially reducing air services in some communities.
Walsh added that he believes mandatory compensation does little to address passenger inconvenience and sends the wrong signal on safety, as it may penalize airlines for factors beyond their control. He points to the EU's similar scheme, which resulted in higher costs and increased delays, as a cautionary example.
