Europe’s Airline Council Says Air Traffic Defies Inflation and High Fares

European airline traffic defied inflationary pressure, surging over 12% YoY in Q3, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by -3.1%, a notable improvement from H1's -7.7%, reports BTN Europe.

ACI Europe highlighted the resilience of leisure and blended demand, particularly on intra-European and transatlantic routes. Olivier Jankovec, ACI Europe's director general, emphasized this trend, stating, "Leisure and blended demand is king, still predominantly focused on intra-European and transatlantic routes – and very much driven by capacity expansion from ultra-low-cost carriers."

Major airports neared 2019 levels, but 48% of European airports reclaimed pre-pandemic volumes. The report underscored challenges for airports struggling with charges amid increased competition while highlighting varied recovery dynamics across regions.
