How long have you been with Etihad? Since March. Before that I worked in Canada for the Indian carrier Jet Airways, and before that I was with Lufthansa for 20 years.

How many languages do you speak? English, French, Dutch and German.

What's the best part of the job? Working with a great team, and the diversity...from emptying the office dishwasher (yes, I do it when it's my turn!) to meeting ambassadors.

How much do you travel? Actually not that much, mainly to New York and within Canada. I'll be going to our head office in Abu Dhabi two to three times a year.

Ever had a brush with fame? A few...including my favourite, (actor and writer) Sir Peter Ustinov.

What's your biggest extravagance? I used to have a boat which was stolen, so I got the insurance money and my wife turned it into a finished basement!  But with four kids it's probably more practical than a boat.

Describe your dream vacation. Going back to the Seychelles with my wife.

What's the scariest thing you've ever done? I used to commute into London on a motorcycle and had some pretty hairy moments.

What do you listen to in your car? Arabic language tapes – it's a hard language to learn!

Whom do you most respect in the industry? Sir Richard Branson.

Any hobbies or interests? My family – I have two sons, 8 and 6, and twin girls coming up to 3.

What book's on your bedside table? The Fool's Guide to the History of the World.

What will be the biggest challenge for the industry in the next 12 months? The ongoing challenge of trying to eke out market share, manage costs and get yields up.
