PortsToronto's request to reopen Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport's 40-year agreement sparks debate amid new federal safety regulations, reports CP24.

The demand for extended runway space, driven by Runway End Safety Area (RESA) requirements, forces a premature renegotiation set for completion by mid-2027. 

The move prompts questions about potential reconsideration of the ban on jets at the downtown airport. Past proposals by Porter Airlines faced opposition, citing noise pollution and environmental concerns. With federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressing intent to lift the jet ban, the city awaits a report for Mayor Olivia Chow's executive committee, setting the stage for a transparent public decision
