The Mexican state of Quintana Roo is proposing a new USD $5 per person tax for cruise ship passengers, set to begin on 01JAN 2025.
As part of the 2024 Fiscal Package, the tax aims to fund infrastructure projects and disaster response efforts, particularly for hurricanes. Cruise lines would collect and remit the tax on behalf of passengers.
Quintana Roo, home to popular cruise ports like Cozumel and Costa Maya, experienced a rise in passenger numbers, reaching almost 4.3 million from 01JAN to 08OCT 2023, despite a decrease in ship visits. The proposed tax could bolster the state's financial resources for vital initiatives.
