GAME CHANGER

Cancun Bridge from Airport to Hotel Zone Nearly Half Finished

The distance between Cancun Airport and the Hotel Zone is only just over 14 miles, but as most tourists know, traffic congestion can make the drive can take a longer than expected.

A new bridge over the Cancun lagoon, called the Nichupté vehicular bridge, is nearly 40% complete and, according to reports, will open this summer.

The 8.8 km-long bridge is expected to alleviate traffic in and out of Cancun’s beach and hotel zone region. Riviera Maya News reports the bridge will be toll free. It will consist of a bicycle lane and three vehicular lanes 3.5 meters wide, one of which will be reversible.

“This bridge is something that Cancun residents have asked for for many years and now it is a reality. It is turning out spectacular and it is impressive,” said Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta. “In a few months we will have a structure that will transform the quality of life of the people of Cancun which will mean spending less time travelling from their workplaces to their homes and vice versa.”

The finished Nichupté Vehicular Bridge will have two access points, one at Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard on the mainland and one at Kukulcán Boulevard on the Cancun hotel strip.

A new train line between Cancun and Tulum is scheduled to open in late February.
